About – Jivhala Society

Jivhala Society for Mentally Handicapped is an institution working for Mentally Handicapped people. Established in 1979 in Solapur, Maharashtra, the society works for the education, rehabilitation, and early intervention of mentally handicapped children, youth and old people. The society has been actively developing and implementing various technical and non-technical training modules as well as interventions for the sustainable rehabilitation. Immediately after its establishment as a registered society (in 1979); the Society started an independent school for mentally handicapped children at Solapur on 1st December 1980.

The main objective of the said school was to provide and empower not only the mentally challenged but also help overcome trauma for their family members. As per the saying of Swami Vivekananda “Education is a key for the development of a responsible citizen; and experiential learning develops an independent personality which builds nation”; Jivhala is functioning in an integrated manner for developing a community which supports and accepts mentally challenged people in an equal manner. The residential school at Solapur currently houses 75 mentally handicapped children. It has 10 specially trained teachers and dedicated staff of 25 including Physiotherapist, Speech therapist, Psychologist, Art teachers, Sport Teachers and other administrative individuals.

Highlighting the problems faced by the mentally handicapped at all available platform enhancing awareness through articles, books, lectures etc. Followed by the school in Solapur; in 1990 Society started a farming workshop for mentally handicapped adults above 18 years of age at village Antroli, South Solapur block. Around 25 km from the main campus.Presently this initiative supports 100 mentally handicapped persons. They are made capable of producing Society’s annual requirement of grains, vegetables, fruit, milk, etc. Beside this they also work for the preservation / conservation of environment. These individuals are from various locations from Maharashtra as well as out of Maharashtra, like MP, Telangana, Karnataka, UP, J & K, Goa etc Institution is registered and currently supported by Social justice and Special Assistance Department, Government of Maharashtra.
